For many parts of society and critical infrastructures, the availability of information and communications technology is pivotal for their regular operation. To provide this availability, computer networks dynamically adapt their topology, mechanisms, and components to compensate for the negative impacts of disruptions and environmental changes. For this adaptation, appropriate monitoring data provided by network monitoring is essential. However, this monitoring utilizes additional communication resources like bandwidth and computation power and may influence the performance of the computer network. On the one hand, highly accurate monitoring data will consume many resources but also provide a detailed view. On the other hand, low-accuracy monitoring data will consume fewer resources but also provide a poor representation of the environment. Thus, there is an interesting tradeoff between the resources used for monitoring and the quality of the provided monitoring data. This talk will focus on this tradeoff and the challenges of monitoring future computer networks, in which monitoring data is distributed and dynamically prioritized depending on the requirements of the computer network. It will further highlight how adaptive monitoring can contribute towards future adaptive and resilient computer networks.
