Titel: Geographies of poverty and inequality

Abstract:

In cultural geography, poverty and inequality are mostly studied from the perspective of people experiencing these phenomena. In this seminar, I will present some of my research in Ireland and Groningen with people living in poor neighbourhoods, regions, and social work professionals. This presentation will first discuss the role of place in poverty and its experience. Second, the mechanisms of intergenerational poverty transfer and strategies of households and social workers to improve their situation. Third, I will discuss the role of geography in poverty alleviation strategies and practices. The conclusion will open a debate for potential future avenues where sociological and geographical perspectives can reinforce each other.
