Popular Religion, Globalization and Political Mobilization

This research theme reunites scholars interested in the force of popular religion in political mobilization from a global perspective. From political Islam, passing through Israeli messianic nationalism, to Pentecostals influence in electoral processes in the global South, popular religion is fundamental in understanding the political scenarios of our time. We understand that the politicization of religion has to be comprehended in light of global encounters and exchanges, as contemporary religious cultures transcend national and geographical frontiers. By exploring the politicization of religion from a global perspective, we examine how grassroots religious movements articulate the global, the local, the political and even the radical into their projects. While we investigate the interface between religious dynamics and political mobilization from a global perspective, we privilege empirical and analytical perspectives emerging from the non-Euro-American contexts, particularly from the southern hemisphere and its lateral connections with the rest of the world.
