General information

Public international law is frequently perceived as a set of rules governing the relations between sovereign states. True as it may be, this picture is far from complete. Human rights, international trade and investment, (forced) migration, the internet, climate change, terrorism and international organised crime have changed our societies, added new dimensions to this field of law and continue to do so. Our approach to studying the dynamic development of international law is through societal transition and the role of law in creating sustainable societies based on inclusion, cooperation and resilience. Hence our central theme:

International law for sustainable societies

This theme fits well within the Groningen Centre for Law and Governance of the Faculty of Law and the University-wide programme on Rudolf Agricola School.
