Kosovo and the European Union

21 mei 2008

The issue of independence of Kosovo and the EU's policy vis-à-vis this new country is viewed in this interview in the light of the EU's interests in the region and, especially, the placing of Kosovo among the so-called 'Western Balkan countries' for which the EU developed a number of special policy tools in order to promote democracy and the Rule of Law. Being classified as a Western Balkan country, Kosovo is thus recognised as a 'potential candidate' for the membership of the EU, since the 'stabilisation and association' package applies. At the same time, since not all the EU Member States have recognised Kosovo, its accession to the EU is impossible. The EU-Serbian relations in the light of Kosovar independence are also touched upon.
