Ramses Wessel co-author of influential legal report on Israel and Gaza

Prof. Ramses Wessel, Vice Dean and Professor of European Law at our faculty, has contributed to a new legal report on the obligations of the European Union and its Member States in relation to the situation in Israel and Gaza. The report, commissioned by members of the European Parliament, has been received with broad interest and is now attracting international media attention.
The legal opinion is based on the recent ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which concluded that Israel’s presence and actions in the occupied Palestinian territories violate fundamental principles of international law. The report explores the legal consequences for third states, including the EU.
Concrete implications for EU policy
Although factual and legal in nature, the report addresses a topic that resonates deeply within and beyond Europe. It outlines, among other things, the EU’s obligation not to support illegal situations, to reassess trade relations involving Israeli settlements, and to avoid diplomatic acts that imply recognition of unlawful territorial claims.
Explanation on Radio 1
In an interview on Radio 1, Wessel explained the legal foundations of the report and discussed the possible implications for EU policy.
