Dr Katerina Tsampi receives NWO-XS grant to study political and gender-related oppression

Katerina Tsampi, assistant professor of Public International Law, has recently been awarded a grant from the NWO SGW Open Competition XS program. Tsampi will receive the grant for her research into the oppression of women who engage in political dissent.
Political and gender-based oppression
Women who engage in political dissent face double oppression: political and gender-based. This complicates the search for justice. While European human rights procedures play a crucial role in addressing political oppression, it is unclear whether court rulings also cover the gender dimensions of such cases.
Developing an analytical framework
Tsampi's research is entitled 'Women political dissent: going beyond the text of European human rights rulings'. She will examine two important cases from the European Court of Human Rights, namely the cases concerning Z. Musayeva and V. Kogan. She will apply the PAN approach (process-actors-narrative) and look beyond the text itself.
The aim of Tsampi's research is to develop an analytical framework for gender-related oppression by examining procedural history, key figures, and socio-political contexts. The research project will start in September 2025 and be completed in June 206.
NWO SGW Open Competition XS program
The NWO SGW Open Competition XS program selects proposals for curiosity-driven, fundamental research in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). The grant consists of €50,000.
