Dr Gerard Ritsema van Eck

Gerard Ritsema van Eck, assistant professor and post-doc researcher in IT law at our Faculty, has been appointed as a country expert to conduct research on behalf of the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA). He will study the use of biometric recognition by Dutch police.

AI Act and use of biometric recognition

Recently, the AI Act was passed. It contains a slew of restrictions governing how and when police force scan use biometric recognition (for example facial recognition). The FRA supports the European Commission and member states in developing more precise rules and guidelines.

Case studies and experts in six countries

In the aforementioned context, it is important to understand how and when police forces can employ biometric recognition. Case studies are being undertaken in France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Greece and the Netherlands. Law firm AWO will lead the research, which will include interviews and observations of how facial recognition is used in practice.
