Dr Jasper Verstappen awarded Embassy Science Fellowship by Dutch Research Council

Jasper Verstappen, assistant professor of IT law at our Faculty, has been awarded the Embassy Science Fellowship by the Dutch Research Council. He will receive 25,000 euros to conduct research on AI policy and law in Singapore.
Identifying collaboration opportunities
The project Verstappen will be working on in the coming months is titled ‘Artificial Intelligence: collaborate with Singapore on AI for the Public Good and ASEAN’. He will spend three months working at the Dutch embassy in Singapore. There, he is going to make an overview of the legislation and policies that exist regarding AI. He is also going to research data used to share data. Based on this, he will help determine what collaboration opportunities exist for companies and policymakers in the Netherlands and Singapore.
Verstappen's research aims to delve deeper into one of the priority areas of the recently published National Technology Strategy, AI and Data Sharing. The goal is to further develop the roadmap and strategy for Singapore, but also to use Singapore's role to connect with the Research & Development and commercial potential of ASEAN countries.
Context van Verstappens onderzoek
The government in Singapore has developed several plans underlying its overall transformation into a digital city-state. The country is positioning itself as an innovation hub and a leader in digitalization, specifically in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
The Netherlands has a good position in Singapore when it comes to digitalization. There are frequent exchanges between our governments and several connections between public-private partnerships in the Netherlands and Singapore.
