Dr. Ratna Juwita part of SHAPE-SEA Commissioned Research Project 2023

Dr. Ratna Juwita's research proposal has been selected for the SHAPE-SEA Commissioned Research Project 2023. Using the grant obtained, Juwita will conduct research on the link between corruption and the right to a healthy environment.

SHAPE-SEA

SHAPE-SEA (Strengthening Human Rights and Peace Research / Education in ASEAN / Southeast Asia) stems from the desire of Southeast Asian human rights and peace scholars to find ways to further develop the capabilities and knowledge of fellow scholars in the region. Through their teaching and research, they aim to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights and peace in Southeast Asia.

Human rights and the environment

The main topic of this year's research at SHAPE-SEA is ‘Human Rights and Environment in Southeast Asia’. The chapters of the various researchers will be compiled into a book. This will provide literature that students and stakeholders can use to better understand the relationship between the environment, human rights and their implications.

Juwita’s research

The research Juwita is conducting for SHAPE-SEA is titled ‘Corruption and the Right to a Healthy Environment’ . She will investigate the link between corruption and the right to a healthy environment. In addition, she will examine what types of corruption exist within the environmental sector. Part of the goal is to help stakeholders understand their legal obligations in the area of human rights and how certain types of corruption may be seen as human rights violations.

The topic of Juwita's SHAPE-SEA research closely aligns with her doctoral research. In early July 2023, she received her doctorate on the topic ‘Conceptualising Corruption as a Violation of Human Rights in Indonesia’. In her dissertation, she argued that the conceptualization of corruption as a violation of human rights in Indonesia is not only possible, but also necessary.
