The Law and Politics of Protecting Liberal Democracy

On June 20 he is invited to address the European Parliament at a joint public hearing, on June 24 four of his students organize an open panel discussion with his support and his inauguration takes place. The central theme during all three events? Prof. John Morijn's specialism: the protection of the democratic rule of law in Europe.

Public hearing European Parliament

The Parliamentary Committees on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and on Constitutional Affairs of the European Union will jointly organise a public hearing on 'Rule of Law Mechanisms in the EU' on 20 June. Prof. John Morijn is one of the experts who will be invited to address the European Parliament at this meeting.

The objective of this hearing is to take stock, from a constitutional and inter-institutional perspective, of the various mechanisms designed to uphold EU values enshrined in Article 2 TEU in terms of prevention, monitoring, sanctioning and enforcement, with particular focus on rule of law and the mechanism foreseen in the Article 7 TEU.

In addition to Morijn, invited to this hearing are: Prof. Dr. Robert GRZESZCZAK (Professor of European Law, Head of Centre for Research on European Institutional Design, University of Warsaw), Márta PARDAVI (Co-chair of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee; experienced civil society leader and human rights advocate) en Prof. Dr. Teresa FREIXES (Professor of Constitutional Law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1986 to 2019).

Law students organize Conversation on the Law and Politics of Protecting Liberal Democracy

Prior to the inaugural lecture by Prof John Morijn, students of the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen will organize the event Conversation on the Law and Politics of Protecting Liberal Democracy. During this event several open panel conversations will take place with academics, civil society leaders, and judges from across Europe and beyond working to protect liberal democracy.

Inaugural lecture: The Law and Politics of Protecting Liberal Democracy

In his inaugural lecture prof. Morijn discusses the law and politics of protecting liberal democracy in Europe. It is in three parts. It first discusses the nature of the current challenge to liberal democracy. It then addresses the law in place to protect it (better) and identifies ways to improve the record. Finally, it reflects on the politics needed to bridge the gap between binding law and current realities.
