PhD researcher Jamie Behrendt is one of the winners of the Sustainable Society PhD Grants 2022, awarded by the University of Groningen. She received additional funding to carry out empirical research on microgrids.
Microgrids are small-scale decentralised electricity systems, which have the potential to manage the efficient integration of renewable energy. Its realization requires a legal framework, which currently does not exist in the EU. The grant will be spent on travelling to selected microgrid sites in the EU. Jamie Behrendt will interview microgrid developers about the legal and economic barriers they encountered while setting up the system.
Out of 22 applications the selection commission awarded 8 grants of 2000 euros. At the Grant Ceremony on 24 November 2022 the grants will be awarded to the winners.
During this ceremony the PhD candidate with the best and most persuasive pitch will also receive a bonus prize worth 1000 euros, to be spend within one year: the possibility to visualize his/her research by a professional designer.
All this years winners are: Denise Mensonides (Arts), Hester Huisman (FEB), Jamie Behrendt (LAW), Junyu Zhang (CF), Kjell Winkens (BSS), Lambert Rozema (FSS), Olga Bernadet (FSE), and Zeqiang Pan (FSS).
