NWO funding from Science Diplomacy Fund for conference on Russian-NL Energy Relations

25 June 2020

The Groningen Centre of Energy Law and Sustainability (GCELS) is going to organise a conference on Russian - Dutch energy relations. The two-day conference aims to facilitate high-level interchange of ideas and lessons that can be learnt concerning the role of renewable energy sources in the energy transition from both the Russian and the Dutch perspective.

The conference focuses specifically on the role of the legal framework in the energy transition in both countries. A common trait of the two countries is the historic reliance of the energy sector on hydrocarbons, and therefore, the production and use of renewable energy sources is slow. Topics included in this conference are renewable energy support schemes, the greening of gas supplies, the regulation of local energy systems and local energy communities, and finally the regulation of heat networks and heat supply.

In order to organise this conference, GCELS has successfully applied for NWO funding from the 'Science Diplomacy Fund', and will organise this conference to further science diplomacy in the field of energy law. The fund aims to bring universities in the Netherlands and Russia closer to each other. Therefore, GCELS partners with the Universities of Utrecht and Leiden as well as with MGIMO in Moscow.

The conference was originally intended to be held in Autumn 2020 but due to Corona, this will be postponed to Spring/Summer 2021. The exact date and programme will be communicated later.
