After completing the LLB programme in International and European Law, I decided to pursue an LLM in European Law in a Global Context and stay loyal to the UG for a little bit longer. I chose this programme because I always enjoyed the EU law courses throughout the LLB. In the end, that was also the field I wrote my final thesis in, and the natural next step for me was to continue learning about EU law. I was particularly interested in this programme because it was not purely focussed on ‘classic’ EU law, but also its external dimension. This is a huge plus for students who want to find a nice middle ground between EU law and international legal systems.

The set-up of the programme is great - students start with more foundational courses, for example on the Internal Market, and then continue with more specialised courses, such as External Relations or Environmental Law. This is a great way for students to develop and discover interests in more ‘niche’ areas, often helping them find inspiration for their thesis and future careers. As the LLM has a smaller group size, the classroom atmosphere is very relaxed, allowing for insightful interaction between the students and lecturers. The academic staff were very friendly and accommodating, which played a key role in keeping students motivated throughout the year.

In addition to that, the UG is an excellent university, located in the best little town. They say ‘Niks gaat boven Groningen’ for a reason. The student life is amazing, whether you want to try new sports at ACLO, stroll through Noorderplantsoen or enjoy the nightlife at one of the many bars and clubs, there is something for everyone. Groningen also offers many opportunities to make friends, such as ESN/KEI week or joining a student association. Lastly, what’s great about Groningen is that it’s a melting pot of many open-minded people from different backgrounds, giving students the chance to also engage with other cultures.

Overall, the LLM in European Law in a Global Context has far exceeded my expectations! So much so that I will not say goodbye to Groningen just yet, but will pursue an additional LLM in International Human Rights Law. After that, I hope to pursue a traineeship at the European External Action Service or at a think tank.
