Incoming exchange programme
Law has been taught in Groningen since before the University was founded in 1614. Nowadays, the Faculty of Law combines this tradition with courses and research that address today’s and tomorrow’s legal challenges.
Going on exchange to Groningen Law
If we have an exchange agreement with your home university, you can apply for an exchange semester or academic year at the Faculty of Law at the University of Groningen. On this website, you will find everything you need about applying, courses, and practical arrangements.
Exchange applications are handled by the International Office (Faculty of Law).

The nomination and application deadlines for the 2026-2027 academic year have been revised. To ensure your eligibility and avoid complications with your visa application, please ensure you meet both the nomination and application deadlines.

Requirements at a glance

Law background: at least 2 years of law studies completed before arrival

Study load: 30 ECTS per semester (60 ECTS for a full year), spread across all teaching blocks

English level: B2 minimum (Bachelor courses); C1 required for Master-level courses
Application overview

Contact your exchange coordinator at your home university and ask to be nominated.

After nomination is accepted, you will receive Mobility Online instructions by email.

Submit your Mobility Online application (before the deadline). Required documents typically include: Official transcript (English), passport/ID copy, and (if required) proof of English.

After acceptance: start the housing search and arrange insurance; non-EU/EEA students are contacted by the Immigration Service Desk (ISD) about visas/residence.

Arrival & course approval: attend the compulsory introduction sessions and finalise your course selection with the Faculty.

Finding accommodation in Groningen can be difficult due to the current housing crisis—start early.
If you have not found accommodation before 1 August, we strongly advise you not to come to Groningen.

Important: Master-level courses require C1 English and permission—students taking MA courses without permission may be excluded from the exam.

Open Courses Law
Open Courses Law
Students from universities that do not have an exchange agreement with the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen can also participate in law courses. These courses form part of our Open Courses Law, and can only be taken after payment of the required fees.
LLB Programme
LLB programme
The Law Faculty also offers a bachelor programme fully taught in English. This 3 year LLB programme on International and European Law is a unique law programme for internationally orientated students from all over the world. The focus is on teaching International and European Union law on the basis of a more conceptual understanding of what law is and how it functions, rather than on a detailed knowledge of national law. The programme has specific admissions requirements.
The LLB programme consists of a number of compulsory courses which give an introduction into several fields of law and compare different legal systems in these fields of law. In the first semester of the third year students will study abroad. They can use this semester for studying national law courses in their home country (only if the foreign university of their choice is one of the partner universities of the Groningen Faculty of Law), but can also opt for further specialization abroad.
