Welcome to the website for the 18th Annual Colloquium of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law - The Future of Environmental Law: Ambition and Reality

The Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen was honored to host the 18th IUCN Academy of Environmental Law. Over the last 18 years the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law has provided a useful and important forum for legal scholars and experts from all parts of the world to exchange knowledge, experiences and insights relating to environmental law in a wide sense. The Annual Colloquium is one of the main vehicles to support the efforts of the Academy. Due to Covid-19 this Colloquium was organized as an online conference.

The Colloquium was held from the 28th of June till the 2nd of July. Due to the online nature of the event we had fewer contact hours each day and organised five days of presentations and discussions. The teaching and research oriented workshops that are customarily held during the same week will be organized at different points in time. Our hope to give the conference a Burgundian flair, featuring a wine-tasting and a gala-dinner in the ‘Der Aa-kerk’ (Der Aa-Church), had to be amended as well, but we are proud to that we were still able to host a digital wine-tasting and offer an online historic tram-ride through Groningen.

On behalf of our Faculty of Law we want to let all keynote speakers, presenters and contributors know that we are most grateful for all their time and efforts and we are looking forward to welcoming you to the Netherlands someday in the future.

Prof. Dr. Kars De Graaf, Conference Chair, and Prof. Dr. Stefan Weishaar, Conference Chair
