Achieving food security under climate change: regulatory challenges ahead!

Jonathan Verschuuren is a professor of International and European Environmental Law at Tilburg University, the Netherlands. He holds a doctorate degree cum laude (1993, Tilburg). In 2016-2017 he was a Marie Sklodowska Curie fellow at the University of Sydney, and he has an extraordinary professorship at North West University, South Africa. In 2017, Jonathan was awarded the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law Senior Scholarship Prize. His research mainly focuses on various legal aspects of climate change, including coastal adaptation and climate smart agriculture, as well as on important foundations of environmental law, such as the role of principles. Verschuuren wrote more than 300 publications in the field of environmental law, including several books, many articles in outstanding refereed journals throughout the world.

She is member of the Maastricht Centre of European Law, METRO (Institute for Transnational Legal Research), and the Ius Commune Research School. Furthermore, Marjan is connected to the Maastricht Sustainability Institute.

Taking stock of global climate law

Marjan Peeters is Professor of Environmental Policy and Law at Maastricht University, The Netherlands. Marjan has been specializing in environmental law since 1987, thereby examining how a high level of environmental protection can be effectively and efficiently reached based on the rule of law and in the context of sustainable development. Core research attention goes to legal aspects of climate change, regulatory instruments for emission reduction, environmental procedural rights, and the way law deals with uncertain risks.

Marjan defended in 1992 her PhD at Tilburg University; this study is one of the first legal analyses of emissions trading in Europe. This much-debated instrument has become one of the core instruments of EU climate law. From 1993 to 2001 she served as a lawyer with the Dutch Ministry of Water Management and Transport, where she gained ample experience with permitting, enforcement, and policy advice in the field of environmental law. She moved to Maastricht University in 2001.

Marjan has co-edited several books in the field of EU environmental and climate law. The latest book is Climate Change Law (Edward Elgar 2016, co-edited with Daniel A Farber), and the next forthcoming book is the Research Handbook of EU environmental law (co-edited with Mariolina Eliantonio). She supervised and supervises several PhD projects. She has served as a member to the governing board to the IUCN Academy of Environmental law between 2008 and 2013 and she currently leads an advisory group on minimising aviation emissions.

Taking stock and achieving high ambitions in water law: dealing with legal, ecological and political obstacles along a long and winding road

Marleen van Rijswick is an expert in the field of water law and environmental law. She often works in multidisciplinary teams in order to study societal and environmental problems. Her research focuses on water law within the broader field of environmental law, spatial planning law, nature conservation law and European and constitutional and administrative law. Research topics include protection against flooding, improving water quality, protection and a fair share of fresh water resources, and urban water management. Marleen was visiting professor of European Environmental Law for several years at the Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris II) in Paris, France. In 2015 she was visiting professor International and European Environmental Law at the Research Institute of Environmental Law of Wuhan University, China and in 2018 at the Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, China. She published in many international and national journals and books.

Professor of Energy Law at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, and Director of the Groningen Centre of Energy Law and Sustainability (GCELS) at the Faculty of Law. She is also the director of the LLM programme Energy & Climate Law, co-director of the advanced LLM in Energy Law organized by the North Sea Energy Law Partnership, co-chair of the research programme Law on Energy and Sustainability at the Law Faculty in Groningen and one of the board members of the Groningen Energy and Sustainability Programme that coordinates all energy research of the university of Groningen.

Carbon Capture and Storage, its ambition and reality

Martha Roggenkamp received her PhD at Leiden University in 1999 and has been professor of Energy Law at the University of Groningen since February 2005. She specializes in International, European and Dutch energy law. She is the chair of the Dutch Association of Energy Law, co-editor of the Dutch Journal if Energy Law and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Energy and Natural Resources Law and the International Energy Law Review. She has edited many books on energy law, including Energy Law in Europe - national, EU and international regulation (OUP) and the volumes I-XIII of the European Energy Law Reports series.

Prof. Dr. Michael G. Faure LL.M. is also the academic director of the Ius Commune Research School and member of the board of directors of Ectil. Since February 2008, Michael is half time professor of Comparative Private Law and Economics at the Rotterdam Institute of Law & Economics (RILE) of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam and academic director of the European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE) programme. Since 1982 he is also attorney at the Antwerp Bar. He publishes in the areas of environmental (criminal) law, tort and insurance and economic analysis of (accident) law.

The role of environmental taxation: Arthur Cecil Pigou at 100 (tentative title)

Janet E. Milne has taught environmental taxation in at Vermont Law School since 1994. Publications include Environmental Taxation and the Law (J. Milne, ed.) and the Handbook of Research on Environmental Taxation (J. Milne and M.S. Andersen, eds.). She is a member of the steering committee of the annual Global Conference on Environmental Taxation. Before joining the law faculty, she was tax legislative assistant to US Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, and an attorney at Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. She received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and clerked for Frank F. Coffin, Chief Judge of the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
