Integration of the (D)MD/PhD, Groninger AGIKO and the Mandema stipend into the GSMS
Since the beginning of this academic year, the GSMS has taken over the coordination of the (D)MD/PhD programme, the Groninger AGIKO programme, and the Mandema stipend from the Junior Scientific Masterclass. The (D)MD/PhD programme provides unique and rapid PhD trajectories, in which two years of fully funded research are added to the last two years of the regular Medicine or Dentistry Master. The Mandema stipend offers recently graduated (D)MD/PhDs the opportunity to set up their own, independent research line.
Together, these programmes aim at preparing talented and research-minded Medicine and Dentistry undergraduate, PhD, and postdoctoral students, for a career as clinician-scientist. This is important, as there is a strong need for medical professionals that can work at the intersection between the different scientific disciplines, and translate new research and technology into the clinic and back.
Please note that the changes are predominantly organizational in nature. (D)MD/PhD students will not notice any changes in their day-to-day programme. We would also like to make (D)MD/PhD students aware that practical information applicable to all UMCG PhD students, including those pursuing a (D)MD/PhD, can be found on our GSMS MyUniversity webpage. Questions can be directed to gsms umcg.nl.
