United against unacceptable behaviour

02 February 2022

At the UG, we find it important for everyone to be able to perform professionally in an open and safe atmosphere. Social safety requires continuous attention; therefore, integrity is one of our core values. Every form of unacceptable behaviour, including aggression, discrimination, sexual and other harassment, is inadmissible.

Unfortunately, we know that this sort of behaviour occurs everywhere, including at the UG and in Groningen student life. We also know that this can have immense consequences for people. As an institution, we are working hard on eradicating this behaviour by making it a topic of conversation and by offering opportunities for reporting concerns and complaints. We are working on prevention and always follow up on signals, reports, and complaints of unacceptable behaviour.

But the most important thing is for us to be united in speaking out against unacceptable behaviour, as it leads to an unhealthy work atmosphere and an unsafe work and study environment. We are therefore calling on everyone to call out unacceptable behaviour among one another, as hard as this may be. Ask for help if you find it hard to confront someone about this, do not look away if you see that someone else is experiencing unacceptable behaviour, and help those who report it. Together, help us to create a safe environment.

Three questions on unacceptable behaviour

What are we, as an institution, doing to prevent and tackle unacceptable behaviour?

Staff members who experience unacceptable behaviour may report this to their manager or HR advisor. Students may approach their lecturer, study advisor, or student counsellor. A solution will be found jointly. If this route fails, feels uncomfortable, or does not lead to a solution, staff members may contact the confidential advisor or the ombudsperson.  A formal complaint may be submitted as well.

What could the UG do further to prevent unacceptable behaviour as much as possible in the future?

All UG staff members and students can contribute to preventing unacceptable behaviour. So, think about how your behaviour may come across to someone else, especially if the other person is dependent on you. Be open to feedback, and be mindful of differences. Listen to the stories of those who feel unsafe and support them as much as you are able to.

Where can I find more information?

All of the information about our integrity policy, including our Zero Tolerance Statement, can be found at www.rug.nl/integriteit. This statement entails that we must take reports and signals seriously and that we must always act if the facts give reason for this, for example by prescribing a disciplinary measure. This is always carried out on the basis of careful decision-making, including thorough research and hearing both parties. Our website also includes information on where to report unacceptable behaviour. Students can also find more information on the Student Wellness Portal.
