Gosens wins the Prix Galien Research Award 2018
03 October 2018
Reinoud Gosens, associate professor in Translational Pharmacology, won the Prix Galien Research Award 2018 for his significant contributions to pharmaceutical research. The award was presented on October 2nd at the 25th Prix Galien award ceremony during the FIGON Dutch Medicine Days in Ede.
Reinoud Gosens is a pharmacologist committed to identifying new therapeutical interventions for chronic lung diseases, especially COPD. Anticholinergics have his special interest. This class of drugs has long been used in chronic lung diseases for their bronchodilating effect. Gosens has discovered that they also intervene with chronic inflammation and tissue remodelling. The use of anticholinergics as anti-inflammatory drugs is now being investigated in clinical studies.
Gosens' group also investigates how WNT-receptor signalling is involved in lung tissue repair mechanisms. They have shown that the WNT-route shows intrinsic defects in asthma and COPD and that overactivation in especially the lung fibroblasts and bronchial smooth muscle cells lead to inflammation, hyper-contractility and tissue remodelling. This research line is still in a basal stage, but WNT-signalling can already be considered as promising potential target for regenerative pharmacology.
Gosens is dedicated to advancing his preclinical findings to the clinic, for which he actively participates in the Groningen Research Institute of Asthma and COPD (GRIAC). As co-chair of this multidisciplinary research programme, he emphasises the importance of a multidisciplinary, translational approach.
Prix Galien Research Award
The Prix Galien Research Award (previously the Galenus Researchprijs) is aimed to promote significant advances in pharmaceutical research. The prize consists of a gold medal designed by Albert de Jaeger (1908-1992), winner of the first Grand Prix de Rome, and € 5,000. The Prix Galien is awarded in 17 countries.
