Wieling conducts computational research on dialects at the department of Information Science. Among other things, he studies how the tongue and lip movements of Dutch and German native speakers differ from those of English native speakers, and how visualizing these movements could help improve their pronunciation.

After graduating with distinction with a Master’s in Computing Science and Behavioural Cognitive Neurosciences from the UG, Wieling gained his PhD with distinction with a thesis researching quantitative methods of investigating differences in dialect. Wieling was appointed a member of The Young Academy in 2014. In May 2016 he won the prestigious European Young Researchers Award. The jury expressed its admiration for Wieling as an exceptional, widely-orientated and socially engaged researcher.
