Dimitry Kochenov - Particular questions arise around Svalbard (Spitsbergen)

Prof. Dimitry Kochenov (EU Constitutional Law), a regular contributor to BBC World radio broadcasts of the Russian service, on April 20 gave an interview on the legal aspects of the territorial functioning of the sanctions against the blacklisted individuals who were instrumental in the occupation of the Crimea by the Russian Federation. Particular questions arise around Svalbard (Spitsbergen) - although it is part of Norwegian territory, Russia has concession rights there under the Svalbard Treaty of 1920, guaranteeing unlimited non-discriminatory access. The special treaty regime should not disrupt the sanctions regime, however.
