Title: Matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials and representation theory
Abstract:
Since the 1950s, starting with the work of Gelfand and coworkers, it is well known that there is a cross-fertilization between representation theory and special functions. Matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials have been introduced by Krein around the same time, and they have found several applications. In 2002 a first derivation of a new family of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials in terms of representation theory has been established by Gr\"unbaum, Pacharoni and Tirao. The purpose of the talk is to present an alternative approach to establish new families of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials from a representation theoretic point of view. The example only involves SU(2) and its representation theory, which will be recalled. This is joint work with Maarten van Pruijssen and Pablo Rom\'an.
