An Alternative Definition of Software Architecture:
Consequences for Software Architecture Design and Evaluation
The lack of consensus around the definition of software architecturehasa significant impact on the field. It results in widely differingapproaches to software architecture including software architecturerequirements specifications, software architecture analysis and designmethodologies and the elements of a software architecture description.
A recent definition of software architecture as "the softwareinfrastructure within which application components providing userfunctionality can be specified, deployed and executed" is based on aseparation between architectural and application components.
The talk relates the above definition to insights obtained from reference architectures like Java-EE, SOA and AUTOSAR and argues that architecture design and analysis need to be done across levels of granularity. At each level of granularity the following should be takeninto account: (a) the architectural responsibilities and the architecturalcomponents to which these are assigned, (b) the infrastructure andinfrastructure constraints with the latter commonly specified via anarchitectural pattern, (c) the architectural tactics used to concretelyaddress the quality requirements and (d) the concepts and constraintswithin which application components are to be specified.
