Title: An Alternative Definition of Software Architecture:

Consequences for Software Architecture Design and Evaluation

Abstract:

The lack of consensus around the definition of software architecture
hasa significant impact on the field. It results in widely differing
approaches to software architecture including software architecture
requirements specifications, software architecture analysis and design
methodologies and the elements of a software architecture description.

A recent definition of software architecture as "the software
infrastructure within which application components providing user
functionality can be specified, deployed and executed" is based on a
separation between architectural and application components.

The talk relates the above definition to insights obtained from reference
architectures like Java-EE, SOA and AUTOSAR and argues that architecture
design and analysis need to be done across levels of granularity.
At each level of granularity the following should be taken
into account: (a) the architectural responsibilities and the architectural
components to which these are assigned, (b) the infrastructure and
infrastructure constraints with the latter commonly specified via an
architectural pattern, (c) the architectural tactics used to concretely
address the quality requirements and (d) the concepts and constraints
within which application components are to be specified.
