Obesity and insulin resistance play a principal role in initiating and perpetuating the pathological manifestations of the metabolic syndrome and result from the combined effects of genes, environment and lifestyle. In this thesis, we investigated genetic and environmental effects on obesity and insulin resistance in European- (EA) and African-American (AA) youth in both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies.
