Nine BSc degree programmes, nine best first-year students. The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) wants its students to aim for excellence and established the Freshman Ranking to inspire first-year students to give it all they have. At the propaedeutic ceremonies on 13 November, the Freshmen of the academic year 2008-2009 received their propaedeutic certificate, the honour of Freshman of the Year and a commemorative gift of the FEB.

FEB's corporate statement 'Adding Personal Value' is strongly applicable to the new Freshman Ranking. The nine freshmen of this year really showed AND gained their added value.
The winners are:

  • Arjan Kleyn Winkel (Accountancy & Controlling, average grade 8,00);
  • Christoph Knitsch (International Business and Management, average grade 8,45);
  • Marije Verwer (Business Administration, average grade 8,25);
  • Jitze Hooijsma (Econometrics and Operations research, average grade 8,66);
  • Mengting Ni (Economics average grade 8,82);
  • Siard Jongsma (Business Economics, average grade 7,83);
  • Arjen van Herwaarden (Economics of Taxation, average grade 8,33);
  • Tomma Borchers (International Economics and Business, average grade 9,22);
  • Catharine Nieuwenhuizen (Technology Management, average grade 7,50);

What is the Freshmen Ranking?
The Freshmen Ranking aims to encourage students to give their very best, to try and achieve excellence in their studies. All new first-year students of the Faculty of Economics and Business have been listed in the ranking. Throughout the year, it compares students’ results within a degree programme and ranks them according to their results. Students can then anonymously view how they performed compared to their fellow students.

A student’s position in the ranking is determined by a couple of decisive factors. The criteria are the amount of ECTS's students have earned outside of their regular study programme; the number of quality points they have received; and their highest and their lowest grade.

The ranking was introduced for the entire faculty last year, after a first, reasonably successful test among first-year students of Econometrics and Technology Management. The Student Administration Office compiles the list, after which the list is published online, after each semester. A final ranking will appear after the summer and will list the performances of all first-year students over the entire year. The best students of each degree programme receive a pen with inscription and a book at their propaedeutic certificate ceremony.
