FEB students team wins think tank competition ‘Create Tomorrow’
On May 7, four students from the Faculty of Economics and Business were awarded the title of best university team in a competition in solving business cases. Out of the 1088 students, divided into approximately 120-130 teams, Inez Miedema, Menno Peereboom, Leendert Jan Onnes, Kirsten Mauer and Tim Stribos were chosen as best university team. Their solution for a Chamber of Commerce case won them four hundred euros and a balloon trip.
Create Tomorrow, the world’s largest student think tank, was organised by the Student Union of Twente University.
Twelve companies submitted a case about problems they encounter in their day-to-day business. On the day of the competition, the student teams investigated one of these problems – in a tent the size of a football field. They had one day to analyse the problem, brainstorm about solutions and work out one of these solutions in more detail. All university teams were assigned the same case, which eventually made the FEB students not only case winners but also best university team.
The Chamber of Commerce (KvK) was interested in a solution to the following problem: How can KvK creatively encourage entrepreneurs in small to medium-sized enterprises to see ‘socially responsible entrepreneurship’ (MVO) as a chance and a challenge and actually start doing it?
The FEB team came up with a solution in three steps. Entrepreneurs must be motivated, informed/activated and kept active in the field of socially responsible entrepreneurship. The jury was impressed by the creative way in which the team drew the entrepreneurs’ attention to MVO by means of a nationally distributed gadget. The solution to keep entrepreneurs active in the field of MVO by using various forums and a supervisory board in which entrepreneurs wishing to be/become active in MVO can be contacted was much appreciated.
