RSAI Fellowship award for Jan Oosterhaven

Professor Jan Oosterhaven of the University of Groningen has been selected as a Fellow of the Regional Science Association International (RSAI). The fellowship is one of the most high profile symbols of academic recognition the RSAI gives, and is a lifetime appointment. Oosterhaven will receive his award at the 48th Congress of the European Regional Science Association (ERSA) in August 2008 in Liverpool, UK. The ERSA is the European branch of the RSAI.

The RSAI Council initiated the RSAI Fellows Award to honor a select group of members of the Association who have made important scholarly and research contributions to the field of regional science. Oosterhaven is awarded with the RSAI fellowship for this innovative research in interregional input-output and demo-economic modelling, the measurement of the economic impacts of transport infrastructure, and the evaluation of spatial policy, projects and instruments.

RSAI

Founded in 1954, RSAI is an international community of scholars interested in the regional impacts of national or global processes of economic and social change. RSAI membership is drawn from all parts of the world, and includes people from a wide range of academic disciplines and professions who share an interest in spatial issues. Regional science is an expanding field which is devoted to the development of theory and method in urban and regional analysis and policy.

Jan Oosterhaven

Jan Oosterhaven, a Professor of Spatial Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Business, has been an active member of the European Regional Science Association for a long period. He co-organized the ERSA congresses with several hundreds of participants in Groningen in 1982 and 1994. He played a big part in re-structuring the former Summer Institutes of ERSA into new Advanced Summer Schools and organized the first of the new Summer Schools at the University of Groningen in 2006. He is one of the longest serving members of the European Organizing Committee of ERSA, from which he retired at the end of 2007.
