PhD thesis Jaap Sleifer awarded with René Kuczynski Prize 2007
The International Conference of Labour and Social History awarded the commercial version of the thesis of Jaap Sleifer ((former staff member of the Faculty of Economics) with the René Kuczynski Prize 2007.
In 2003 Jaap Sleifer completed his PhD thesis on the East and West German economies at the Groningen Growth and Development Centre , one of the Research Centres of the Faculty of Economics. The title of the thesis is: "Falling behind: the East German economy in comparison with West Germany from 1936 to 2002".
In this thesis he made a benchmark comparison of the industrial sector in East Germany and West Germany in 1936 that was published in the Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte 2001/1 (Title: "Separated Unity: The Industrial Sector in 1936 in the Territory of the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany").
The International Conference of Labour and Social History awarded the commercial version of his thesis with the René Kuczynski Prize 2007. The awarding ceremony takes place in the frame of the opening of ITH's 43rd conference in Linz, September 13th, 2007. An award presentation by the jury will be followed by a lecture of prize winner Jaap Sleifer.
Jaap Sleifer, born in 1972, studied at the University of Groningen and graduated in (economic) history and also in law. After completing his PhD thesis he worked at the Centre for German Studies (CDS) at the University of Nijmegen, where he organized an international conference of the CDS and the N.W. Posthumus Institute on "economic growth and the entrepreneur in Germany and the Netherlands". From February 2005 until present Jaap Sleifer is a policy advisor at the Dutch Advisory Board on Administrative Burden (Actal).
