Video: the darker sides of our histories

28 June 2024

Historians Dr Anjana Singh and Bram Tánczos, both from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Groningen, along with Lieuwe Jongsma, curator of the Groninger Museum, conducted research into the history of slavery of the city of Groningen on behalf of the Groningen City Council.

Their research shows that the Groningen City Council and several residents of Groningen were involved in the trade and exploitation of enslaved people and financially benefited directly and indirectly from the trade of enslaved peoples in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. In response to the research, the Groningen City Council has apologized for the role the city administration played in the history of slavery.

In this video, Anjana Singh discusses the dark sides of our history.
