Speech Lab Groningen and History of Reading receive KNAW grant 'Appreciated!'

22 April 2021

Recently, two research groups of the Faculty of Arts were honoured for their science communication activities by the RNAAS with an amount of 10,000 euros each: Speech Lab Groningen (Martijn Wieling) and History of Reading (Sabrina Corbellini). With the pilot fund Appreciated!, the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science wants to recognise scientists who have dedicated themselves to science communication for some time.

Both research groups may use the allocated amount of 10,000 euros to support or enrich their own science communication activities. Wieling's team will use the RNAAS contribution for the development of a board game that offers children and adults a glimpse into the results and the process of linguistic research. Corbellini's team wants to use the fund to develop a series of podcasts and videos about the history of reading.

About the pilot Appreciated!
The fund is in line with the new way of recognising and appreciating researchers that recently has been introduced within the Dutch knowledge field. Science communication is seen as an integral part of an academic career. The pilot fund is one of the initiatives of the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science to encourage science communication.
