In June 2019, the first YESS BSS network meeting took place. Personnel policy was discussed with the dean and over 30 early career researchers from the faculty (for notes click here). The meeting concluded with a bingo aimed at getting to know the skills and expertise of other early career researchers.
The Open Science Community Groningen (OSCG) Kick-off event took place on October 22nd 2019.The OSCG brings together students and staff, and provides advice, support, and training for applying Open Science. Open Science can be considered a movement or an approach to science that aims to make science more accessible, reproducible and transparent. Open science practices include pre-registration, replication research, sharing data and research tools, open peer-review, publishing open access, and open science evaluation and policies. Over 140 UG staff members have already signed up as an OSCG member. For more background info on the OSCG, please see OSCG website and the article by the University Newspaper. For a more elaborate summary of the OSCG kick-off event, see the corresponding OSCG newsletter.
In October 2019, YESS BSS organized a week in which multiple activities were organized for early career researcher of BSS as well as activities specifically aimed at YESS BSS members. One of the activities open to all focussed on training opportunities for staff not on the tenure track and a Q&A session with HR representatives during which, for example, regulations concerning extensions following life events were discussed. Additionally, we hosted a workshop organized by the Scholierenakademie on disseminating research among primary and secondary school students.
YESS BSS also organized skills workshops for members only, for example on science blogging and writing grant applications, and an in-depth brainstorm session with the Scholierenacademie.
