December 6: Seminar by Professor Amos N. Guiora (University of Utah)
On Monday 6th of December, the department of Sociology will host Professor Amos Guiora, Professor of Law, S.J. Quinney College of Law, the University of Utah. Guiora is a world renowned expert on terrorism and leading scholar on religious extremism and counterterrorism.
From 13:00 to 16:00 o’clock, Professor Guiora will teach three subsequent seminars for master students in the Sociology course ‘Criminaliteit en Veiligheid: Radicalisering en Terrorisme’. Topics discussed include the following:
I. Terrorism and counterterrorism. Which counterterrorism strategies do different countries apply, and which – international and domestic – dilemmas do decision makers face when they confront terrorism?Prof. Guiora offers an in-depth look at counterterrorism strategies of seven different countries, hereby examining the competing concepts and definitions of terrorism at the national and international level, and the institutions and processes relevant to operational counterterrorism.
II. Religious extremism. Balancing national security and the rights of individuals is the most significant issue faced by liberal democratic nations in developing their counter-terrorism strategy. The question is whether governments should introduce new limits on religious freedom and freedom of expression in the context of religious extremism. This is addressed by examining the disparate policies and security circumstances of five countries: the U.S., the UK, the Netherlands, Turkey, and Israel.
III. Global Power structures and international relations. Conflicts in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan are of profound importance not only for the regions involved, but also for global politics and international relations. The global and domestic impact of conflict (regardless where it occurs) has a direct impact on international, regional and domestic relations. To understand the interconnectedness, specific conflicts---and their impacts---will be discussed.
