Age in the Workplace Meeting 2021

Age in the Workplace meeting St. Gallen 2019
Age in the Workplace meeting St. Gallen 2019

The theme of the meeting is “A strengths-based approach on getting older: Unique contributions of older workers”.

The 2021 Age in the Workplace Meeting (AWM) is organized conjointly by the Department of Human Resource Studies at Tilburg University and the Department of Organizational Psychology at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, from October 27-29, 2021.

At this time, we plan to hold the meeting at the University of Groningen. However, due to the uncertainty arising from the Covid-19 pandemic, we will keep open the possibility to change the meeting into a hybrid or online event. We will communicate the final decision about the meeting location and format at the end of July 2021.

About the meeting

The theme of the meeting is “A strengths-based approach on getting older: Unique contributions of older workers”. Although we would like to especially encourage empirical and conceptual research on the theme topic, we will also be happy to accept empirical and conceptual work from the broader field of work, aging, and retirement.

The abstract submission deadline is May 31, 2021.
For questions, please contact us: awm2021@rug.nl

IMPORTANT: Note that this meeting is by invitation only. That is, at this time we are only including researchers who were attendees at the 2015, 2017, or 2019 small group meetings on Age in the Workplace in Limerick (Ireland), Lüneburg (Germany), and St. Gallen (Switserland).

We welcome high quality submissions. Please note that, because we highly value personal interaction possible only in small groups, the time we have for oral presentations is very limited in the interest of maximizing our conversation time. As the meeting chairs, we will likely need to make decisions about some papers being presented as posters. These decisions will be based on time-frame restrictions and diversity of speakers and topics, not the quality of the submission.

A maximum of one paper can be presented by each lab. However, a single lab can present multiple posters. Please indicate your openness for oral and/or poster presentation at the time of submission.

Submission types

1 . Oral presentation. Oral presentations could focus on completed but unpublished research or on work in progress, eliciting suggestions from the group.

2. Poster presentation . Poster presentations can be unlimited in number, and posters can be displayed throughout the entire meeting.

3. Other proposals . This type of proposal will be unlimited in number. This is an open format and could include a collaboration proposal, provocative pitches, subgroup or panel discussions, world cafe etc. Divergent formats are welcome, as long as the session triggers discussion or collaboration.

Please send your abstracts, detailing the submission type (max. 500 words) to awm2021 rug.nl by May 31, 2021. Decisions about acceptance will be communicated by July 1, 2021.

NEW: PhD Workshop

This year the AWM includes a PhD workshop prior to the AWM sponsored by Work, Aging and Retirement, published by Oxford University Press. This workshop is available for 12 PhD students, each affiliated to one of the invited labs. The workshop will be held on Oct. 26. During the workshop, PhD students have the opportunity to present their project and receive feedback from senior researchers in the field. Work, Aging and Retirement will sponsor 1 night hotel stay for selected PhD students. To apply for a spot in the PhD workshop, PhD students can submit a summary of their project or paper (4 pages max) by May 31, 2021. Please note that you cannot submit the same paper as submitted to the AWM. PhD students will be selected based on this summary. They have to send in their full paper by September 1, 2021.

Besides the scientific exchange and discussion, we also want you to experience the Dutch culture, and will organize trips and outings including a conference dinner.

Sincerely,
Meeting Chairs
Susanne Scheibe (University of Groningen) and Dorien Kooij (Tilburg University)
