José Casanova – The Jesuits and Globalization: Christian Universalism, Cultural Particularism, and the Challenges of Glocal Inculturation

On June 13th José Casanova (1951) will be awarded with an honorary doctorate as proposed by the Faculty of Theology & Religious Studies. José Casanova is one of the world's most prominent scholars in the sociology of religion, with a special interest in the contemporary period and the relation between religion, secularism, and processes of globalization.

Public Lecture

Because of this honorary doctorate, professor Casanova will give a public lecture on June 11th. The lecture will examine the role of the Jesuits as pioneers and globalizers of the early modern era, analyzing in particular their method of ‘accommodation’ or nativist inculturation in their encounters with the religious and cultural ‘other’ from the Americas to East and South Asia.

The faculty also organises a panel discussion with professor Casanova on June 12th.
