Research

Our research is conducted in ten research institutes. We have 1,400 academic staff members including 139 professors and about 1,200 PhD students. Unique to our Faculty is the combination of science and engineering. Research and teaching programs range from nanomaterials and biomachines to astronomy, from mathematics to pharmacy, from neuroscience to computer science, and from molecular and evolutionary biology to marine biology. Despite tremendous growth, we still maintain close contact between professors/lecturers and students and offer small-scale labs.

New Faculty name

In 2017, the name of the Faculty changed from 'Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences' to 'Faculty of Science and Engineering'. This new 'English-only' name is often used in international academia. It better reflects the great diversity of disciplines and courses the faculty offers today.

Since FSE was founded in 1815, the kaleidoscope of disciplines has been expanded with for example industrial engineering and management, artificial intelligence and computing science. ‘Science’ and ‘engineering’ are commonly used terms in the international academic world. Furthermore, the new name expresses the engineering profile in the faculty’s education and research. We were the first university in the Netherlands to start in 1958 with engineering degrees like chemical engineering, applied physics and applied mathematics.
