Application timetable

Exchange students seeking to study in Groningen for the first semester (September-January) or the full academic year (September-June) should be nominated before April 1. Exchange students seeking to study in Groningen for the second semester (February-June) should be nominated before October 1. Even though we will do our best to provide visiting exchange students with accommodation in an International Student House, we can not guarantee the availability of student housing. Students applying later than the deadlines indicated here run a serious risk of not finding suitable housing in the city of Groningen.

Once we have received a student's nomination, we will create the possibility of making reservations in the international student housing system of SSH. We will also then start the official process of visiting student registration at the University of Groningen. We will send a so-called "acceptance" (invitation) email to the student (copied to the person/department that nominated the student), explaining all procedures. We do not have an online application, university or course registration form.

Course timetables "Spatial problems and spatial policies"

The academic year at the University of Groningen starts early September and ends mid July. The academic year is divided into two semesters, each of which are divided into two parts.

"Spatial Problems and Spatial Policies" runs from:

  • September 3 to December 3, 2021 ( = compulsory introduction September 3 + semester 1a + 3 weeks of semester 1b)
  • February 4 to April 15, 2022 ( = compulsory introduction February 4 + semester 2a)

"Spatial Planning Group project" runs from:

  • 1b "early version": October 18 - December 24, 2021 (4 weeks semester 1a + 6 weeks semester 1b), only for students that need to return home late December because their second semester starts in January
  • 1b "regular version": November 15, 2021 to February 4, 2022 (semester 1b)
  • April 18 to June 24, 2022 (semester 2b)

Other, regular courses at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences run in 4 semester blocks (see table below). Each semester block represents 15 EC or 420 hours of study (1 EC = 1 European credit = 28 hours of study); the total for one academic year is 60 EC. A workload of approximately 15 EC per block of 10 weeks can be taken as a 'maximum' guideline for exchange students when making their study plans.
