Inaugural lecture Rieneke Slager: Of shareholders and sustainability: Examining varieties of stewardship

On Friday 9 October, Professor of International Sustainability Management Rieneke Slager will deliver her inaugural lecture titled ‘Of shareholders and sustainability: Examining varieties of stewardship’. In her lecture, she will examine how institutional investors, such as pension funds, act as stewards of capital by addressing environmental, social and governance issues alongside financial returns.
Slager explores investor influence on corporate sustainability in a variety of ways, questioning whether and when stewardship produces meaningful improvements in environmental and social systems.
In all her research, Slager focuses on the ways in which corporations manage environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues they encounter. She is particularly interested in the ways in which stakeholders, including shareholders, can help or push corporations to play an active role in tackling sustainability challenges. In previous research, Slager has examined the interplay between institutional investors, their tools, and corporations. For example, she has studied how sustainability ratings influence corporate sustainability responses, and how institutional investors work together to influence corporate sustainability through shareholder engagement on ESG issues.
