Grant for large multidisciplinary project Add-reAM

14 October 2025
Prof. dr. Dirk Pieter van Donk

Dirk Pieter van Donk has received a grant for a fully financed PhD-position as part of a large multidisciplinary project Add-reAM (Advancing Dutch Circular Economy through Additive Manufacturing: Strategies for Repair and Remanufacturing using AM.

Van Donk explains: “Additive Manufacturing (AM) is the process (like 3D printing) where materials are added layer by layer to create or repair objects. AM is particularly useful for producing complex designs, reducing material waste, and enabling localized production.”

The grant is awarded by the NWA ORC programme (Research along Routes by Consortia) by NOW (Dutch Research Council). The purpose of the NWA ORC programme is to encourage innovative, demand-driven research. The research is carried out by chain-wide and interdisciplinary consortia, in which researchers collaborate with relevant societal (public and/or private) partners and citizens.

The project is led by Professor Ian Gibson of the University of Twente and brings together 7 Dutch universities, major industrial players and public and civil organizations. 15 PhD’s will explore complementary aspects of additive manufacturing, including technical design, logistics, sustainability assessment, and regulatory frameworks, aiming to make ‘repair’ the new standard and ‘remanufacturing’ the engine of circular industry.

At FEB, the project aims to develop design principles for circular supply chains and networks using remanufacturing and AM technologies for spare parts, focusing on cooperation and governance within such SC networks.
