Maximilian Osterhaus and Andra Smadu win prizes for their research
Maximilian Osterhaus and Andra Smadu, both staff members at the Faculty of Economics and Business, have recently won prizes for their research. Osterhaus, assistant professor at the department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance, won the Kreissparkasse Düsseldorf award for best thesis in economics and business studies defended at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf in 2021. Smadu, who is a PhD candidate at the Global Economics & Management department, was one of two winners of the young economist ERMAS prize.
Maximilian Osterhaus won the Kreissparkasse Düsseldorf award - presented by the Kreissparkasse Düsseldorf bank and endowed with 3,000 euros- for his PhD thesis on the topic of econometric modelling and estimating individual heterogeneity in discrete choice models. Osterhaus was praised for cleverly combining approaches from statistics and econometrics with approaches from the areas of machine learning and artificial intelligence in his dissertation, offering genuine added value and useful tools for empirical research.
He obtained his PhD degree summa cum laude from the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics of the Heinrich Heine University Düsseld o rf at the end of 2021. Osterhaus was supervised by Professor Florian Heiss. After completing his PhD, he joined the University of Groningen as an Assistant Professor of Econometrics.
Andra Smadu won the young economist prize for her paper 'Uncertainty shocks and the monetary-macroprudential policy mix', which she wrote together with Valeriu Nalban (IMF). The paper is based on a study that is part of Smadu’s PhD dissertation. Dr. Jakob de Haan and dr. Christiaan van der Kwaak are her PhD supervisors.
Smadu received the prize at the Annual Scientific Conference of Romanian Academic Economists from Abroad (ERMAS). The conference is a joint project among the top Romanian universities in Economics. The ERMAS Association Prize is awarded yearly by the members of the conference’s scientific committee .
