Blended and active learning

How do we use blended education at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB)?

Our education blends on-campus classes with engaging online experiences, giving you the best of both worlds. In the classroom, you will participate in lively discussions, hands-on practicals, and collaborative group assignments. Plus, you tackle real-world data, scenarios, and case studies, allowing you to apply concepts to practical situations.

Stefanos Vavakos (student BSc Economics and Business Economics)

''In this modern day and age, collaboration and communication of ideas exist in physical classes but also online. Being a student at FEB has magnified both my experiences by allowing me to connect with eager learners from all over the world to exchange ideas, perspectives and experiences. Being offered tools to collaborate in person or online feels liberating, as your knowledge constantly gets tested and feels like your horizon is constantly broadening.''

Playful learning experiences

Are you ready for your educational journey? At FEB, several courses from different programmes offer a wide range of engaging tools to boost your learning experience:

  • Educational games: engage in real-world scenarios with simulation games on strategies or games where you manage a company using your knowledge in various fields.
  • Student research platforms: online platforms that facilitate research, collaboration, and data sharing within academic or professional projects.
  • Lecture videos and short knowledge clips: several courses offer recorded lectures and short clips on specific topics to support your studies.
  • Podcasts and audio fragments: enhance your understanding with on-the-go audio resources.
  • Unique apps: that offer a personalized online learning platform with extensive practice and recap material.
  • Online escape room: introducing course topics and levelling the playing field for team members, with some friendly, game-based competition.

Dr. Daniel Vullings (Assistant professor) on how to integrate games

''Beyond traditional lectures and tutorials, we integrate technology to enhance learning. Some courses provide short videos to explain key concepts for at-home study. In the Econometrics and Operations Research (EOR) program, we offer the EOR game, allowing students to apply their knowledge both on campus and remotely. This hybrid and active learning approach, including simulation games, prepares students to tackle complex problems similar to those in their future careers.''

What is active learning?

You learn best when you actively build your skills and knowledge by connecting new ideas to what you already know and challenging yourself to think critically. You will get the chance to ‘learn by doing’ and reflect on those experiences, helping you grow and sharpen your understanding.

Active learning methods

Some active learning methods that you’ll encounter during your studies at FEB are:

  • Case studies;
  • Group discussions;
  • Collaborating with diverse teams on assignments;
  • Practicals;
  • Tutorials.

These approaches not only make learning more engaging but also help you apply your knowledge in a practical setting.

Active learning classrooms

Picture yourself in an active learning classroom designed for collaboration and creativity. Instead of stiff rows of desks, you sit at round tables or in movable chairs, making it easy to work with your classmates.

Multiple screens and whiteboards are scattered throughout the room, so you can brainstorm and share ideas in smaller groups. The teacher is not just lecturing—they are guiding discussions and encouraging you to think critically. This dynamic setting boosts your engagement and helps you sharpen your problem-solving skills, making learning a more interactive and enjoyable experience.
