Starting your student life in a new country can feel overwhelming - but it doesn’t have to be. That’s where ESN Groningen’s Introduction Week comes in! Designed especially for international students, this vibrant and social week marks the perfect start to your time in Groningen.

Whether you're here for a full degree or just a semester, the ESN Introduction Week is your chance to meet fellow students, explore the city, and get a taste of Dutch culture. With around 2000 new internationals joining our week, it’s one of the largest events of its kind in the Netherlands!

What is ESN Groningen?

The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is a student-led organisation focused on helping international students integrate into life in the Netherlands. Our introduction week is not just about orientation - it's about connection, culture, and creating lifelong memories.

Highlights of Introduction Week

From the moment you arrive, ESN Groningen ensures you're part of a welcoming and festive environment. You will be placed in a group with other new students and two Introduction Guides who will help you navigate the week and make sure you have an unforgettable time! You’ll stick with this group throughout the week - many stay friends long after.

Here's what you can expect:

1. Welcome Ceremony

Kick off the week at the official Welcome Ceremony, hosted at the Stadskerk. You’ll hear from the president of ESN and a special guest speaker. It's your first taste of how enthusiastic the student community is here!

2. Culture Festival

At the Culture Festival, you will get insight into the different student associations in Groningen. Try some of our fun workshops including: yoga, dancing and essential rules for biking in Groningen

3. Pub Crawl

One of the most popular events! Explore Groningen’s vibrant nightlife with your group and Introduction Guides. You’ll discover local bars and figure out your new go-to spots!

4. Sports Day

Looking to stay active and find out about the sport opportunities in Groningen? ESN organises a Sports Day during introduction week where you can try out different activities, from volleyball to badminton, and connect with local student sports associations.

5. Themed Parties

Throughout the week, there are four amazing themed parties! The parties all fit into the general theme of this year’s introduction week: Ticket to Paradise!
