Eurosonic Noorderslag (ESNS) is taking over Groningen again! For all of you new to the city, ESNS is a four-day music festival hosted in Groningen. With over 30 venues and countless music artists and interesting discussion panels, it’s a pretty huge event for our small city.

You might have already noticed a few things about ESNS, like all the interesting festival-like structures and stages on the Vismarkt and the Grote Markt. In the next few days, the whole city will turn into a festival ground, with bands performing in shoe stores, bars, clubs, and coffee houses.

Since there is so much going on, it’s hard to fit it all into one blog that is perceivable. To make life easier and to be able to fathom the entirety of ESNS, I’ve broken the events down into subcategories. You’re welcome.

Free events

The great thing about the ESNS festival is that a lot of it is free for everyone to attend - you don’t even need a wristband. The Dutch newspaper Dagblad van het Noorden has posted a full guide to everything free happening in Groningen these next few days (the article is in Dutch, so make sure to get a Dutchie to translate it for you!). I’ve linked my favorite free events below, so be sure to check out the Facebook events for more info!

Grunnsonic 2020

Electric Jungle Eurosonic special - a mini electric jungle festival hosted in the Concerthuis

Synagogue Showcase 2020: concerts in the Folkingestraat synagogue

TSH Live 2020 | official part of ESNS artists playing in hotel rooms, the lobby and the restaurant of The Student Hotel

EM2 ~ Wild Wild West Party ~ Esns2020 Rising Stars // Pinguin Radio free performances in the Drie Gezusters

EPEX - The European Poster Explosion 2020: not a performance but definitely worth attending: a poster exposition with a huge variety of silkscreen posters and different art prints.

Store sessions

While these are technically also free events, I wanted to give them a little bit more attention because they are by far my favorite ESNS events. Local stores like the Skate store, the Idenza shoe store and the Plato vinyl store are transformed into cozy concert halls. It sounds really random, which is actually the best part of it. One of our very own computer science students, Simon de Wit, also known as ‘Blanks’ will also be performing at Plato as well.

Ongehoord at ESNS ◭ In-store: Skatestore

The Vices at ESNS: young Dutch rock band performing in the Idenza shoe store and in the Plato vinyl store

DOR | ESNS 2020 tiny room concert at the Student Hotel with the Groninger band DOR.

Concerts and parties

Next to all the free performances and events, you can attend, there are also more exclusive events that you have to pay an entrance fee to. You can find the full list of ticket prices that they give entry to on the ESNS website. Around the city, our favorite clubs and bars like OOST, Warhol, and Lola have their own mini-festivals where you can buy passe-part outs for (full entry ticket). Check them out below.
