Party Picks

Finally, it is here. After months of waiting for warmer temperatures and staring at desktop backgrounds of tropical islands, summer has finally arrived in Groningen. Finally, you can go have barbecues in the park, go for a swim or just complain about the heat all the time. Yet summer also means that this blog, just like its authors, will go on a well-deserved summer break until the end of August. However, before we are jetting off to sip coconut water on a tropical beach somewhere, we have one last #TheCityIsOurCampus for you guys. And what better way to say goodbye than with a special summer edition? We hope to see all of you back in September and hope you have a great start to your vacation with these special outdoor weekend tips:

Events

DOT Outdoor: Life is a Beach 2019

Ahhh summer in Groningen. The best time to hang out by the canals, go to the park with some friends and chill on the beach. Wait a minute ... a beach in Groningen? Yep you heard right. The Stadstrand located by the DOT is Groningens own inner city version of the Costa Brava, complete with sand, water and less sun. So if that doesn’t sound like the next hotspot for hordes of British tourists who want to save money on sunscreen, I don’t know what does. Admittedly, it is a bit smaller than your average ‘normal’ beach and it might not entirely replace a holiday in Spain, but hey it’s still got sand. Additionally, the DOT next to the Stadstrand will also be the location of a big outdoor party this Sunday featuring some well known DJ’s such as Kav Verhouzer. So if you are feeling beachy and don’t keep your expectations too high, this could be the right place to spend your Sunday funday.

De Culinaire Verleiding Groningen

This weekend you can leave your barbecue at home when heading to Noorderplantsoen, as there will be a massive food truck festival taking place in the park. From frozen yoghurt to Thai street food and vegan hotdogs - the Noorderplantsoen will turn into the culinary hotspot of the city for one weekend. Besides food there will also be live music, drinks and even free Salsa lessons to keep you entertained. The best part? There is no entry fee and everything is completely open air. The bad part? Food Trucks tend to be kind of expensive, so you might want to skip lunch if you want to eat a full meal there. To sum it up: if you feel like ruining your freshly acquired summer bod, have a solid plus on your bank account and happen to be in the park, you should definitely check this out

Let's take it outside!

As the title makes clear, this event will be held outdoors. But what exactly are they taking outside? The trash? The party? The dog? Nope, none of these. The correct answer is: Yoga. Upcoming Saturday morning you can connect your ying and your yang during an outdoor yoga session in the Stadspark. The connection to nature and your surroundings is obviously included in the price, as is the fresh air and speaker system of the frat boys located a few metres away. Joke aside, Yoga in the park sounds like a wholesome way to start off your summer vacation and process some post-exam trauma.

Science Friction - after - guided tour and vegetarian BBQ

“This sounds like a massive nerd festival, dude”, is what you might be thinking right now and I must admit that this was my initial reaction as well. But don’t let the title fool you, as this event is much less science and more art than you might expect. If you are looking for something artsy to do but don’t want to cower away from the sunlight in some gallery or art museum, then this is worth checking out. Experimental and contemporary art collective NP3 is inviting everyone to join this guided tour on Friday where excerpts of the book "Benimm Dich - a guide to healthy human-machine interaction" will be presented at the Rem Koolhaas Videobusstop. Afterwards there will be a vegetarian BBQ because after all art connoisseurs also get hungry sometimes..
