12 Essentials in My Uni Bag

Packing your bag for uni means deciding what you actually need. Sometimes you might need a course book, and sometimes all you need is your phone.
However, there are 12 things I believe are essential to have with you at all times. Together, they help me feel prepared for almost anything the day might throw at me.

1. A Laptop, Tablet, or Notebook
Having a laptop during lectures and seminars is always helpful for taking notes, checking Brightspace and working on assignments between classes. However, sometimes writing by hand helps you retain information better, so a notebook or tablet is also a great alternative.
2. A Pen
Sometimes I forget my pen, and when I need to sign an attendance sheet, I suddenly start to look around like a headless chicken, seeing if I can borrow one from someone.
Don’t make this mistake. Be the person with the pen.

3. A Small Umbrella
The weather can be rather fickle. From sunshine to rain in less than 10 minutes.
I was once caught in what I thought was a light drizzle, but it quickly turned into heavy, heavy pouring rain, and you guessed it, without an umbrella. Definitely should have had a look at the Buienradar before going on that walk.
So I suggest having a small umbrella in your bag; you never know when it may come in handy.

4. Bluetooth Headphones
I think this one is self-explanatory. I don’t want to hear people talking.
On a more serious note, sometimes the UB might be crowded, and noise-cancelling headphones will certainly help reduce the sounds of people walking around, typing and/or even trying (yet failing) to have hushed conversations.
5. Cable Headphones
Just a backup option. Especially if you forgot to charge your headphones. That way you avoid walking to class alone and without a personal soundtrack.
6. My wallet with student card
Your student card is very important to have on you. You never know when you will need to enter the Harmonie via a shortcut, or even when you have forgotten your student number and need to log into Brightspace.
Keeping it in your wallet means you always know where it is!
7. Gum
I would not say you *have* to do this, but studies have shown that gum and mints can help you concentrate. Now, did I make this up? We will never know.
Anyway, gum and mints are always useful after lunch or a coffee.
8. Thermos flask or Mug
Since January 2024, the UG has stopped offering free paper cups for coffee, tea, etc.
To avoid having to pay for a reusable cup, bringing a mug or a thermos flask seems to be the best idea. This way, you can have your iced coffee or cappuccino in peace.
9. Charger
Don’t forget a charger. You will need it during long study days!

Now for a list of fun additions.
The following items are not necessarily essential for surviving a day at uni, but they are nice additions to have!
1. A small camera
You don’t need to do this, especially since your phone has one. However, a small digital or disposable camera can make everyday moments feel a little more special.
It is a fun way to capture random pictures of your friends, campus and city!
2. Lotion
Soft hands, always a must
3. Perfume/deodorant
Sometimes, you are at uni and just need a quick touch-up, nothing crazy.
These are the 12 things I usually carry in my bag for uni. Of course, everyone’s essentials will be different, but having these items with me makes long days a little easier, comfortable and enjoyable!
