A webclass about Religious Studies

Religion is an omnipresent everyday phenomenon in practically all cultures. Of the seven billion people on earth, six billion call themselves religious and worldwide, there are no fewer than 10,000 religious denominations. Religion does not occur in isolation; it affects people’s daily behaviour economically, politically, psychologically and socially. Religious Studies investigates religion as a phenomenon. The central question we ask ourselves is not to what extent religions are ‘true’, but how religion affects people’s lives and what people do with it. The web class Religious Studies gives you a taste of what it entails to study Religious Studies at the university of Groningen. The web class is divided into four weeks. Every week, we’ll investigate religion in a different context, for example the relationship between religion, conflict and peacebuilding. You’ll learn to critically reflect on the relationship between religion and culture, analyse challenging texts and take a stance.

Workload and grading

If you want to earn 10 credithours, you’ll have to hand in the assignments and finish the final assignment in the fourth week. Please keep in mind that you’ll have to spend approximately three hours a week on preparation and online classes. You’ll get a certificate at the end of the web class. If you would like to use this web class for credits at your own school, you will have to discuss this with your school yourself. For example, you could ask one of your teachers to join the web class as well, so he or she can evaluate if the web class’s contents are sufficient for receiving credits.
