Auger, Pierre Victor

The Frenchman Pierre Victor Auger (1899 - 1993), born to a chemist, was a physicist.
He and Elise Meitner discovered, independently from each other, the Auger effect.
He found that cosmic radiation events were coincident in time meaning that they were associated with a single event, an air shower. He estimated the energy of the incoming particle that created the shower to be at least 1015 eV.
