Why choose Groningen?

As the economic and cultural capital of the region, the city enjoys a bustling reputation, while retaining a safe community character. Groningen is a strikingly youthful city. Roughly a quarter of the city’s 200.000 inhabitants consists of students. You will find them everywhere, studying in the park, riding a bike, or having a drink with fellow students in one of the many pubs.

The city offers students a wide array of possibilities to develop themselves on all levels with its excellent sports facilities, debating clubs, cultural activities, (international) student associations. Students are encouraged to make the most of their student life, and Groningen is an excellent place to do so.

Walking around in Groningen, you can still feel a medieval atmosphere in some areas, while in other parts you can admire groundbreaking modern architecture. Culture is central in Groningen. There are many museums, annual festivals, cinemas. But if you do feel like leaving the vibrant city life, the countryside is never far away.

The Groningen police force appointed two student-agents, who are available for students at all time in order to make sure that their stay in the city is safe and comfortable. They inform students about issues such as burglary, noise-prevention or bicycle-fencing.

Visiting Groningen

Groningen has a wide variety of guest houses and hotels. Trains to and from Schiphol airport, Amsterdam, Utrecht, and The Hague go to Groningen at least twice every hour. Groningen can also be reached by car, but parking can be a bit tricky since Groningen’s downtown area is car-free. Hotels will often offer bicycle rental.

Not only the city, but also the surroundings of Groningen are worth a visit!
