Guidance and advice

If you have any questions about studying and being a student which are not directly related to your programme, come to the Student Service Centre (SSC). We can help you to look for answers and remove any obstacles that are blocking your study path.

Are you a student of the University of Groningen? Then you will find more information by logging on to the Student Portal (Login required).

Learning to study efficiently

The transition from secondary school to university is sometimes trickier than you'd think. If at first you're not sure about how to approach your studies, your mentor or study advisor can give you tips about planning your work and sticking to your schedule. They can also help you to organize the huge volumes of work you are expected to deal with. The SSC has various courses designed to help you with your studies, varying from study supervision to skills development. They include courses and workshops in effective studying, academic writing, giving presentations, successful exam techniques, and many more.

Free online course

Want to study in a more brain-friendly way? Regardless whether you are (already) a student at the University of Groningen or not, you can follow the course Improving Your Study Techniques. In this 4-week online course, trainers of the Student Service Centre will give your information, tips and exercises about studying effectively.

More information can be found on the page Improving Your Study Techniques of the Future Learn website.

Overview of other SSC courses

You will find an overview of all our workshops and training courses on the University of Groningen intranet. This information is only available to students and staff of the University of Groningen so if you are not (or not yet) a student, please contact us directly.

Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, ASD

If you have a learning disorder or functional disability, you will probably have experience of how to modify your environment to meet your specific needs. The first step is to arrange a meeting with the study advisor for your programme to discuss your options. You should then make an appointment with one of the SSC student counsellors to make a formal application for the modifications you require. This is also an opportunity to discuss any other arrangements and provisions that could be important during your time at university.

A confidential discussion and personal advice

You can come to us with any doubts about your study technique or your choice of programme, or if you want advice about paying for your degree programme. We can also help with difficult situations in your private life or study stress. Explain your situation to one of our student counsellors or psychologists in complete confidentiality and you can be sure that we will do everything in our power to help you continue your studies.
