Registration with the municipality

Anyone staying in the Netherlands for four months or longer must register with the Municipal Personal Records Database (in Dutch: Basisregistratie Personen, BRP) at the municipality.

It is advisable that you register as soon as possible and do not wait until four months have passed. You need to register with the Municipal Personal Records Database in order to obtain a BSN (social security number). The BSN is required if you apply for example, a Dutch basic health insurance, phone subscription or Dutch bank account.
